Today we had a discussion on Ebonics. We discussed what Ebonics means and how it relates to Education today. The term Ebonics is easily identified to the African American culture. With that being said should a African American be judged on the way he or she talk? One aspect to this question we as a group look at is the education of that individual. If he/she is well educated and carry the same credentials of another individual of a different race, should that African American be discriminated because of the way he/she talk?
These questions are what we are faced with not only in Education, but also in America. Discrimination against African Americans and many other races still exist today. Even though an individual may be very intelligent, they still may be looked or judge a certain way. It comes to should a person change who they are, in order to fit in to what society perceives what " we should be".
My point of view is that a person must find that balance of who they are as a individual and still be able to be themselves within a society. Is it a tough to find that balance? Yes but it is a balance that is necessary in the world today.

Home Schooling is it Good or Bad?
Today we had a interesting discussion about Home Schooling. The issue that was raised is better for a child to be home schooled or go to a traditional school? With home schooling a child is somewhat sheltered socially because they can not interact with other children. This can be a hindrance for a child's development as they grow into an adult, and they do not have the ability to interact with other people. Another issue with home schooling is are the parents or instructors at home "certified" to teach multiple subjects to their child? When a child does not have that interaction with other children, it may be difficult for that child to adjust into society. In today's world communication is very important and some cases it make the difference with your friends, career, and overall appearance to others. As far as being certified to teach all subjects that is a valid point. Throughout high school I had various teachers who taught me everything from Physical Education to Science. Each teacher I had that was their particular field of expertise.
On the other hand, the positives to home schooling were as follows; the child receives that one on one interaction that may not have been received in a traditional school. Secondly, home schooling creates a safe and positive learning environment for the child. Lastly, home schooling can offer a myriad of resources to ensure the child receives an all around education. In education having a safe learning environment is essential to students development. With the violence and behavior issues that exist in education, home schooling serves as positive alternative. Also, with home schooling parents can make the home schooling experience the same or better than the traditional school setting. Again if done correctly and parents maximize their resources home schooling can be a great alternative.
My personal opinion about home schooling is that parents must do what is best for the child. In our discussion today both sides displayed great points and examples of Home schooling. As I reflect on the discussion I asked myself, what I be a different person if I was home schooled? Until today it never crossed my mind, but what I find interesting is that going to a traditional school scoped me into who I am today. By that I mean the socialization with my peers, the academics, basketball teams and so on and so on, helped me become who I am today. In that whole mix of education and learning for me, the foundation of me as a person was derived from my parents. Now if I was home school would I have done better academically? That is a question that can be debatable, because I feel if I was home school my grades would have been better possibly but I might have missed out on being a kid.
This subject was not only intriguing but also a self reflection for me and my education. We might not find the "true" answer to this question, but the key is to make sure us educators/parents we do what is best for the child.

WebLog 1: Class Survey
My name is Rashad Wright. I am from Cleveland, Ohio and my primary e-mail address is rwright12@jcu.edu.
I am pursuing my M.Ed and initial license in Physical Education. I am entering my last semester of course work this Fall. I currently have been teaching PE for the last four years at a Imagine Harvard Avenue Community School. I love working with kids and helping them excel in all facets of life.
I love people and meeting new people. I love working with the youth everyday. I also enjoy working out and coaching basketball. I also run a youth a program where I teach kids behavioral, social, and etiquette skills. I am very focus hard working, and driven individual.
What has to be in a place first and foremost is a positive teaching environment. When this is in place it makes it easier for me to communicate and discuss information. I enjoy discussing with my classmates and bouncing ideas off one another.
Discussion format setting I excel in along with oral presentations. These areas of learning give me a great opportunity to orally present what I have learned.
One of main concerns of Education is the low SES areas. The reason I feel this way because I teach in the inner city and I see the struggles of these students. For example, reading is very low for most in my school building. I have kids who are 5th grade students that may read on 2nd grade level. My co-workers work extremely hard to improve their students reading ability. For example, teachers have various workshops and programs for the students to help increase their reading skill. By the end of the year that 5th grade student may be reading on a 4th or possibly a 5th grade level. Is the on level with other 5th graders heading to 6th grade? No, but it does show a great deal of improvement from start to finish. This is where I struggle with Education and the guidelines that are associated with certain standards of Education.
