The Importance of Extracurricular Activities
Today we discuss the reading from Joel Spring's book. In Chapter 9, Spring talked about extracurricular activities. The structure was to help shape individuals to conform into the workplace and society. Today there are many activties that are being cut or there is a " pay to play" option. One point that was brought up in our discussion was how team sports and activties help students become better students. I agree with this point for a couple reasons. One reason is that sports and activities give students something to be apart of. For example, when I coach basketball it is more than coaching basketball, it is about helping indviduals reach their fullest potential on and off the court. I teach my players how to excel in their social, behavioral and life skills. Basketball is the honey that attracts the students and once I get them in the gym, I can teach them the things to be succesful.
Secondly, sports and activties give students something to be apart of. Typically, when you are apart of activity or group there are standards that must be met such as, grade point averages. When this is in place students feel the need not to disappoint their teammates, but also themselves.
I believe team sports and activties are needed to enhance the overall student/person.

Why is Physical Education needed in School's Today
Physical Education is needed for a number of reasons. One obvious reason is health. Currently, obesity is a huge problem in America today. There has been various programs started to address this issue such as, the First Lady's let's move campaign, Everything is geared around increase health awareness in the US, but most importantly our youth. PE in schools today are a strong component to the solution of this growing issue.
Secondly, I feel as if PE helps a persons' self -esteem. It is a saying that if " you look good, you feel good" PE helps a person to feel that way. Constant moving and the ability to various " active" activities, gives that person a great sense of accomplishment.
Lastly, I believe PE can help a student grow in their other classes as well. If a student is allowed to express him or herself in PE through various movements, the more focus they can be in the classroom. I have seen students excel in PE and carry that momentum into their other courses. PE gives them an outlet to find out they are and what they can accomplish. By that I mean, being able to accomplish a sense of a healthy lifestyle and a " positive" mindset it can only help a student not only in their course work but in life.
